Author Interview Series: Writers' Quirks Featuring Christina Yother

Today on Writers' Quirks, I'm interviewing author Christina Yother.

Thanks for joining us, Christina! Tell us about your latest project.
I am approaching release day for the third novel in my Hollow Hearts Series, Reconcile. I am also working on research for a historical novel that takes place in the 1940’s.

Sound interesting! Now for some quirky questions...

Have you ever fallen in love with one of your characters?
Yes! I wish I could say it is one of the male protagonists in my books, but it is honestly
a minor character that appears in all three novels. He goes by Old Sol and he is so kind and gentle - almost like a grandfather. I just adore him!

What is the best place for dreaming up your storylines?
Carpool! I feel like I spend so much of my week waiting in the carpool line for my children. I always keep a notebook handy because I find myself daydreaming as I wait. Also, I dream up amazing stuff right before I fall asleep. Too bad I’m always too exhausted to get up and write them down!

What is your favorite snack while writing?
I have a love affair with coffee. It is right beside me all the time. Right now, though, I’d say my favorite snack is pretzels dipped in French onion dip! Crunch, salty, perfect!

That sounds delicious! How do you feel about pen names?
I understand why some authors use them when they’re crossing genres, but I truly don’t think they’re necessary.

What is the most not-true-to-self writing or marketing idea you’ve considered (or done!)?
I did a Twitter campaign a while back with a company that specializes in indie authors. It felt so spam-like to me and I try very hard to keep from spamming my readers or followers. I won’t try that avenue again.

How are your books different than the millions of other books?
I believe that my books bring a bit of realism to them through the dialogue and subject matter. I also believe that my books can connect with reader no matter where they are in their personal spiritual journey.

What one question has no one asked you about your book/character/writing life that you wish they would?
No one has ever asked me what my daily writing life looks like. I’m always fascinated to see how other writers break up their time and fit in all the necessary tasks, but so few ever dive into this question!

So, what does your daily writing life looks like?
6:00 am - wake up, coffee, tend to the dogs, get the kids ready for school
7:30 am - put the kids on the bus
7:35 am - refill my coffee
7:40 am - sit down to check email, facebook, and other social media sites
8:00 am - start writing! Or start editing! This is when my “work day” begins.
11:30 am - Take a break, eat a bit of lunch, watch a little Netflix
12:00 pm - depending on the day I’ll either jump back into writing if I’m on a roll or I’ll sit down for a little bit of reading time. It’s important that I find time to read everyday!
2:30 pm - head to carpool
3:15 pm - pick up kids, homework, mom-mode, after school activities (softball, karate, scouts, chorus - depending on the day)
6:00 pm - dinner! Sometimes we eat earlier if we will be off doing activities
8:00 pm - Kids head to their rooms to read
8:30 pm - Tuck in kids, spend time with the husband, prepare to-do list for the next day. Sometimes I’ll write in the evenings, but I don’t tend to be as productive late in the day.
10:00 - Head to bed. I usually read for an hour before I fall asleep
The next day I get up and do it all over again.

You're one busy author! Where would you like people to connect with you online?

Christina, thanks for stopping by and sharing some of your writer quirks with us!

Christina's book Reverie, the first book in the Hollow Hearts Series, is available now.
