Author Interview Series: Writers’ Quirks Featuring Lia London

Today I begin a new author interview series called Writers' Quirks! I'm so excited to roll out this series by featuring the fabulous Lia London. Lia is the author of the recently released sweet romance Her Imaginary Husband.

Welcome, Lia! Let's get to some quirky questions!

Have you ever fallen in love with one of your characters?
Does hero worship count? I suppose it’s more likely that I’ve brought the things I love into the characters, so they become
assorted reflections of an ideal.

What is the best place for dreaming up your storylines? The shower or the elliptical at the gym. Of course. Because it’s hard to write down ideas there. But I do have Aquanotes now (waterproof pad on suction cups in the shower).

A waterproof pad?! I could totally use one of those! What is your favorite snack while writing?
The tallest Diet Coke around. Then, when I have to go to the bathroom, I can work out the dialogue as I’m walking down the hall. By the time I get back to the keyboard, the banter is sharp.

How do you feel about pen names? I think they can serve many purposes. In my case, I use my maiden name because my married name is unpronounceable. It’s also handy for folks who write in a variety of very different genres and want to brand each one, or who prefer a level of anonymity. I’m thinking about using one when I write for children.

What is the most not-true-to-self writing or marketing idea you’ve considered (or done!)? I have yet to go to any kind of writers’ conference. The whole schmoozing for hours—or days—with complete strangers thing would be a waking nightmare.

My sentiments exactly. How are your books different than the millions of other books? I balance well-crafted language with approachability well. That means that people of a very wide age range and educational background can find something to like. Also, my comedies are known to cause spontaneous (and embarrassingly loud) eruptions of laughter.

What one question has no one asked you about your book/character/writing life that you wish they would? “Where can I buy 100 autographed copies?” or “Will you accept this check for $50K as an advance while you write the sequel? Take your time…”

So, will you accept this check for $50K as an advance while you write the sequel?
Bwahahahaha!

Where can people stalk you online, I mean, find you online? Follow me on Twitter or visit my website.

Lia, thanks for being the first brave author to share a few of your quirks with us!

Lia's latest release Her Imaginary Husband is now available.

    1. Thanks. The AquaNotes are a valuable tool, for sure. A friend of mine told me about them when I whined about the choices one has to make between getting a luxurious shower (or at least rinsing all the shampoo out) or remembering brilliant ideas for plot twists. Voila! Problem solved. Crank up the steam!
